CHALLENGE
The current process of finding study spaces on campus that have available seating and are distraction-free is frustrating to many students due to a lack of sufficient space, organization, and way-finding within these spaces.
OPPORTUNITY
Make the process of finding study spaces on campus more convenient and effective to support students’ current study habits.
Identifying the User (Personas)
I identified the people or users who I’d be designing for by creating Personas. I created three Personas that represented target participants and communicated their needs. Personas were derived from qualitative research, especially the behavioral patterns observed during interviews/observations of users, information provided by participants, and second-hand data (reference books, papers, internet, online forums, etc).
Design Ethnography
I spent as much time as possible with a Personas group: interviewing them, observing their activities, and participating in what they do. Through this I learned a great amount about the daily tasks of this group which led to the beginning of generating ideas that genuinely improve these people’s lives through design.
Participatory Workshop
I conducted a participatory workshop with my personas group. I initiated the process by developing a design toolkit that best engages participants in the design process. I developed a script detailing activities, instructions, objectives (helps with conducting the workshops). While running the workshop between 1.5 and 2 hours with 2-3 participants, I documented the process with video and still images.
Design Concepts, Storyboards, & Journey Frameworks
Based on the findings from the participatory workshop, I developed two 'design concepts' and two associated storyboards and Journey frameworks that clearly describe the situations/scenarios of use and stakeholders' experiences for each design concept. The design concepts are different design interventions based on my previously defined 'design direction/solution'.

Final Concept & Video Prototype
Finally, I created a video scenario that walks through the process of identifying my participant group's challenges by providing a summary of your findings and proposing a design solution to their problems.
